Where's the snow? Flagstaff dealing with a very dry winter

Posted: Updated:

Arizona under an unusual weather alert. When you look at Flagstaff you'll see something missing... what's missing? Snow! It's been bone dry in our state for the last month and that's not good for Flagstaff where people normally go this time of year to play in the snow.

Flagstaff is in the middle of what may soon turn out to be its longest, dry winter, the last time this happened was in 1972 according to local residents.

Normally this time of year a weekend like tomorrow would see hundreds of people sledding at the wing mountain snow play area, instead, it's closed.

A look at the San Francisco peaks, where Snowbowl is located  and you'll see there's not much snow at all on top.

If the Snowbowl wasn't making snow, chances are it might be shut down too. Even so, ski shops like the Peace Surplus outdoor store are still slower than they should be.

"We open at eight I had my first customer 9:40 today" said Brad Shorb, the store manager. "So normally in January especially on the weekends we would be sold out of everything" said Shorb.

Making matters worse there doesn't seem to be any end in sight. The forecast for the next week has no rain or snow in it. For a city that counts on winter weather hopefully the weather will change soon.

"Oh yeah definitely praying to the snow god, they're going to burn some skis for him" said Shorb.
