Money Monday: Preventing identity theft at tax time

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) -

Bill Kowalski, a former FBI agent and now with Rehmann Financial, joined Murray Feldman to talk about identity theft at tax time. He offers up the following tips during this National Tax Identity Theft Awareness Week.

Preventing theft:
· File your tax return early in the tax season
· Respond promptly to IRS letters, but not e-mails, texts, phone calls or social media posts
· Never give out your social security number

Shorter version, perhaps more "screen friendly:"
· File early
· Respond promptly - but wisely
· Protect your SSN

Responding to theft:
· Contact the IRS ID Theft Protection Specialized Unit at 1-800-908-4490.
· File an Identity Theft Affidavit
· Order credit reports and put a fraud alert on your credit cards
· File an identity theft complaint with the FTC and with the police.
· Request an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS (CPO1A)

Parents and teachers know school supplies don't come cheap. Many teachers even buy school supplies out-of-pocket. But now, a new Detroit company is doing more than selling school supplies - they're also giving back.
