PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

An Arizona dog who was almost euthanized gets a second chance at life and now he's headed to the Westminster Dog Show.

Meet Sonic the pirate, an Arizona pooch headed right for New York and the Westminster Dog Show.

"I want sonic to go not because he's the fastest dog or the best dog but because he's a really good example of what you can do with a rescue dog" said Suzanne Myers.

That's right, Sonic is a rescue. Wandering the desert near Tucson when he was 4 months old, hours away from being euthanized he was rescued. Adopted by Suzanne Myers his name full of fun and spirit just like him.

"We came in and Sonic was hanging from the curtains pulling the curtain rod from the wall, separation anxiety, hanging from his teeth and I said looks like something a pirate would do so we started calling him Sonic the pirate" said Myers.

Sonic the pirate will be part of the agility trial that takes place on the Saturday before the 138th annual show next week. He'll be competing  in the first masters agility championship.
