Studio 11 LA Super Bowl Drinks: Beer And Non-Alcoholic

Posted: Updated:

The Super Bowl is a great excuse to throw a party. For many people that means throwing a 12-pack of generic beer in a tub of ice. But it's very easy to make fun and tasty drinks that your guests will definitely remember. Cocktail experts David and Lesley Solmonson of the website stopped by Studio 11 LA to share their shrub drink recipes. A shrubs is an old-school American class of drinks made with vinegar, fruit, and sugar.   In the summer, shrubs are a thirst-quenching way to beat the heat. During cooler months, adding a bit a heat to a shrub warms as it refreshes.

Blackberry-Jalapeno Shrub

1/2 c. blackberries, washed
1/2 of a roughly 3-inch jalapeño, halved again and sliced
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1/2 c. apple cider vinegar

1. Prepare the jalapeno by removing seeds and membrane. Slice the jalapeno into circles, then halves.
2. Combine blackberries, jalapeno slices, and sugar in a non-reactive container.
3. Store covered in the refrigerator for 1-2 days or as much as 4 days.  The mixture will begin to combine, producing juice (the longer left, the more liquidy).
4. When the mixture has combined, pour it into a fine-mesh sieve and press down on the solids to extract the juice into another container.
5. Add the vinegar and stir to combine.
6. Pour into a lidded jar or container and store in the refrigerator for up to one month.

1 ounce blackberry-jalapeño shrub mix
6 - 8 ounces ginger beer

1. Add both ingredients to a collins (tall, narrow) glass

Or, for, something with a bit more kick, try:

1 ounce blackberry-jalapeño shrub mix
1 ounce cerveza syrup (recipe below)
7 ounces cold Mexican lager (Bohemia)
Wedge of lime

1. Add shrub, syrup, and lager to a collins glass
2. Squeeze lime over the top
3. Stir gently to combine

Cerveza Syrup
2 parts lager (Bohemia)
3 parts sugar (white)
