Mother, daughter rescued after getting lost on McDowell Mountain trail

Posted: Updated:

After a search, rescue crews were able to find a valley mother and her 8-year-old daughter who became lost near the McDowell Mountains.

The two went hiking in the Tom's Thumb area earlier Monday and couldn't find the trail on their way down.

According to Scottsdale Fire Department crews, the mother called 911 around 5:45 p.m. to let them know she was lost.  Her cell phone ran out of charge prior to crews obtaining their exact location.  By 8:30 p.m., a Maricopa County Sheriff's Office helicopter crew found the hikers.

No injuries were reported.

Battalion Chief Dan Bunce stated 18 fire personnel, along with police were at the scene.

Firefighters are reminding the public to wear appropriate clothing when hiking and prepare for the unexpected by bringing a fully charged cell phone, flashlight and plenty of water.

The mother and daughter's names were not released.
