Arizona man sickened on cruise ship infected with norovirus

Posted: Updated:

A valley couple spent their vacation being treated for a virus and they weren't alone -- nearly 200 people on the cruise ship were sick.

Last week was a bad week for cruises.

There was a Royal Caribbean cruise headed to the U.S. Virgin Islands where 700 people became ill with the norovirus.  Then there was this Princess Cruise ship on a trip to the Caribbean where 162 passengers came down with the norovirus.

Among them, a Scottsdale couple who never imagined their vacation would be spent in the infirmary and quarantined!

"Monday I had the best day."

Murray Sharkey thought he and his wife would be spending a week in paradise on a cruise, making stops along the Caribbean.

"I enjoy snorkeling.. beach.. my wife went to see the ruins."

But by day three, his dream cruise turned into a nightmare at sea.

"I started getting ill Tuesday night.  I threw up Wednesday morning."

Murray and his wife were one of the nearly 200 people aboard the Princess Cruise Line ship infected with the norovirus.

And as if vomiting, fever and night sweats weren't enough to deal with, they were then confined to their cabin.

"Somebody from the med company said I was quarantined.  Stay in the room.  I can't have anything to eat."

With so many sick passengers, the Captain turned the ship around and headed back to port in Houston.  The Sharkeys thought their ordeal was over until they were given a letter from the medical staff:

"You will not to disembark unless you pass records our security systems have been updated with your name to prevent you from disembarking prior to the completion of disembarking."

And along with the letter, a bill.

"And charging me for medical they said some people paid a lot. $750 for services.  They said take it up with the insurance company when you get off."

He says he expected to have memories from this trip, just not the ones involving stomach aches and first aid.

"The whole thing went downhill."

Sharkey says he got a refund for one day since the ship got back a day early and Princess has reportedly offered people on that cruise 20 percent off future cruises.
