EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

An armed robbery Monday in Evanston has similar characteristics to other robberies in the area, police in the northern suburb said.

Investigators have been probing a rash of robberies in the south Evanston area over the past month, most involving a pair of men with a handgun confronting unsuspecting victims and demanding money and other items, Pioneer Press is reporting.

In the Monday incident, a 19-year-old man was walking about 10:30 a.m. from the Howard Street Red Line, two men approached him in the 200 block of Chicago Avenue and demanded money, said Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott, department spokesperson.

They struck the victim several times in the head, causing lacerations, said Parrott. One of the offenders went through the victim's pockets, but nothing was apparently taken.

Meanwhile, the offenders fled westbound on Chicago Avenue, and then on to Mulford Street, police said.

The victim was later treated at Saint Francis Hospital.

The offenders were described as black males, 18 to 20 years old.

One of the offenders was about 6 feet tall, and wore a red coat with the Pelle brand name.

The other, believed to be the gunman, was described as shorter, standing about 5-foot-6, and wore a black mask and black fleece.
