GLENDALE, Ariz. -

Glendale police have released the name of the 43-year-old man killed by an officer in a parking lot near 59th and Thunderbird Road on Thursday.

the suspect has been identified as Stephen Wayne Ross. He was wanted on felony warrants for his arrest for dangerous drugs, aggravated identity theft and forgery.

According to police, Ross had a violent criminal history and was known to flee from police.

Glendale Police Wanted Fugitive Task Force detectives and two U.S. Marshals were searching for Ross and eventually found him in the busy parking lot. That's when they decided to move in for the arrest.

The task force boxed Ross' vehicle in and at one point, police say detective Jim Carlo fired his weapon because he feared for his life and the life of others.

Ross was taken to a hospital where he died on Thursday. According to officers, a handgun was found inside Ross' vehicle.

Police say Carlo is an 18-year veteran officer with the Glendale Police Department.

He has been placed on paid administrative leave per officer involved shooting protocol.

According to police, Federal Agency protocol won't allow Glendale Police Violent Crimes detectives to interview the involved U.S. Marshals until early next week.

Police will confirm the actual number of shooters or further details in reference to the shooting until the interviews are complete.
