CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 60-year-old man convicted of beating his cellmate to death in the Cook County Jail in 2007 was sentenced to 32 years in prison Thursday.

Judge Timothy Joyce sentenced David Jamison to 32 years Thursday for the murder of his cellmate, John Lambert, the Cook County State's Attorney's office said. Jamison was convicted of first-degree murder following a bench trial in October 2013.

Jamison was an inmate at the jail on June 25, 2007, when he beat to death the 25-year-old Lambert, who was being held on a drug charge, authorities said.

Jamison had argued with Lambert earlier that day, upset that Lambert let another inmate read one of Jamison's books, prosecutors claimed. Jamison attacked Lambert later that night, with the beating causing severe head trauma.

Jail officials did not notice until the next morning, when a correctional officer handing out breakfast trays found Lambert vomiting and seizing, prosecutors said.

Lambert, of Logan Square, died of his injuries at Stroger Hospital about two weeks later, authorities said.

Jamison told officials Lambert had repeatedly fallen out of bed during the night and eventually decided to sleep on the floor, authorities said. But an inmate in a nearby cell reported hearing the men fighting.

Jamison is already serving a 25-year prison sentence for a separate burglary case, state's attorney's office spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said. He must complete that sentence before he can begin receiving credit for the 32-year murder sentence.
