Rare violin thieves caught with help of valley company

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -

Crooks made off with a five million dollar Stradivarius violin and the bad guys were caught with the help of a valley company.

Police say the suspects used a Taser to temporarily incapacitate the victim in order to steal that instrument. Little did they know that by using the Taser it lead authorities police right to him.

"The FBI, even Interpol was involved, this was a major crime heist," said Steve Tuttle with Taser International.

A crime heist for a one of a kind 300 year old Stradivarius violin, worth an estimated 5 million dollars.

The crime went down after a the musician finished a performance with the Milwaukee symphony orchestra in Milwaukee. The weapon the suspects used Taser to subdue the victim.

"You're not able to do any coordinated action you can't really move you're immobilized for 30 seconds while this is on and that's unfortunately was able to occur in this particular case," said Tuttle.

Steve Tuttle, with Taser International which is based in Scottsdale says the shock caused the musician to drop the multi million dollar instrument and the suspect took off with it. The suspect was unaware that by using a Taser he left a trail leading police right back to him.

"It's called an anti felon identification tag it looks like confetti, it's a little bit smaller than a three hole punch," said Tuttle.

When a Taser is deployed there are over 20 to 30 tags that come out of the Taser cartridge. Those tags are basically a calling card back to the registered owner.

"We were able to determine who we sold that to, which was a distributor then the FBI in Milwaukee then went forth and contacted that distributor that lead them to a dealer and that led them eventually to an arrest in this case," said Tuttle.

That violin was found in the attic of the suspects house still in perfect condition.

The tags have three different colors that come out with each discharge pink, yellow and clear.
