Deadly crash into scaffolding in West Village

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - One person was killed and four others injured-- two critically- when an MTA bus and a stolen box truck collided Wednesday in the West Village sending the bus onto the sidewalk and into scaffolding.

The deadly incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. on the corner of West 14th St. and 7th Ave.

Bus driver William Pena, 49, of Hillside, NJ was killed. Two passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries, reported the Associated Press.

The truck driver, Dominic Whilby, 22, of Georgia, was questioned by police at the hospital and taken into custody. He faces several charges including vehicular manslaughter. He was treated for non-life threatening injuries.

It is not clear what caused the M14 bus and truck to collide.

All the injured were taken to Beth Israel Hospital

7th Ave. was closed between 13th and 15th Streets.

West 14th Street was closed between 6th and 8th Avenues.
