Woman escapes burning apartment, climbs out of window into neighbor's home

Posted: Updated:

It was a close call for a valley woman Friday morning after her condominium caught fire and she was forced to climb through a window to escape.

"She was very calm, but she was saying, 'fire, fire, fire,' she was very clear that there was a lot of fire," said Anthony Sacco.

Sacco says it was around 1:30 a.m. when he smelled the smoke and heard a nearby resident alerting neighbors of a fire inside the home.

He said the woman unlocked the gate that sat over her window, opened the window and crawled out onto the roof.  Moments later, her next door neighbor was reaching for her.

"I thought about trying to get my ladder and just figured it was easier to pull her through the window.  It didn't seem like it was an immediate fire threat, so just to pull her through to get out of the house was a lot safer."

The neighbor didn't want to be identified, but shared her story.  She says her neighbor, who she describes as elderly, complained of smoke inhalation.

"Her mouth and nose area were covered in soot.  Just black, really, really black... she had been in there for a while... the smoke was dark and black."

Sacco, who says he didn't hear smoke detectors, alerted the other people who live in the 4-plex, getting them to safety before firefighters arrived.

The woman was taken to a hospital for smoke inhalation and is expected to be okay.  Her name was not released.

Investigators are still looking into the cause of the fire.
