HAATCHI & OWEN: 3-legged dog and 7-year-old boy you need to see

Posted: Updated:

"It's hard to describe. It's almost like he understands. The day that Haatchi met Owen was utterly incredible. It was electric. It was spiritual."

Those are the words of Colleen Drummond, speaking about the day her 7-year-old son, Owen Howkins, met his best friend – a rescued Anatolian Shepherd named Haatchi.

Owen has a condition called Schwartz-Jampel syndrome, which causes his muscles to be permanently flexed. As he grew older, Owen became more aware of his condition and differences, making him afraid to go outside and interact with strangers.

Haatchi lost one of his legs when he was hit by a train in North London, but was rescued by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Will Howkins and Colleen Drummond eventually adopted Haatchi, and changed Owen's life forever.

"There was just like a communication between them, that only they would understand," Drummond said. "There was an immediate bond, like they both knew each other was different and there was an instant acceptance of those differences."

"Instead of staring at Owen and asking what's wrong with you, people were asking about Haatchi," Howkins said.

"He changed my life to not be scared of strangers now," Owen said.
