Dinkytown car theft victim dragged down street by crook

Posted: Updated:

She's got a bruised shoulder and is in a lot of pain, but one woman who was dragged by her own vehicle while a thief stole it right in front of her says she is lucky even though she lost a lot.

On average, a car is stolen every single hour in Minnesota. More than 8,000 vehicles were stolen last year, totaling $27 million in losses. For Mariza Fleming, however, her loss was not measured in money alone.

While some people woke up to seeing their cars towed, Fleming and her husband woke up to find their car being stolen by a teenager and went to confront him.

"My husband on one side, I'm on the other," she recalled.

As the thief sped off, Fleming's jacket caught on the passenger rear view mirror and she was dragged along the side of the car.

After she freed herself, she watched as her 1995 Honda headed down University -- and she told Fox 9 News that thief got away with more than he'll ever know. Not only was it her first car, but it symbolized a special milestone as well.

Growing up, Fleming's father was diagnosed with colon cancer and was too sick to work. Her family was evicted from their home and spent years moving from one motel to another. Fleming even watched as her parents' car was repossessed. Those are memories that linger.

"Walking on egg shells, never know what's going to happen," she said. "You never know if your things are going to be taken away. You never have anything that's just yours."

Despite it all, she overcame. She graduated with honors and recently married her high school sweetheart. They have put an ad out on Craigslist, looking for their stolen car. It wasn't much -- just a rusted Honda with a busted fender -- but it was theirs.
