Local Man Battling Cancer Gets Huge Support From Facebook Community

Posted: Updated:
SPRINGFIELD TWP., Pa. -

FOX 29 is sad to share the news that Danny Hammond has passed away. He battled cancer since he was a kid and received huge support from a Facebook community after doctors stopped treatment. We spoke with his family hours before his death.

It's been a tough 12 years for 21-year-old Danny Hammond of Springfield, Delaware County, his four siblings and his parents. Hammond was waging his 4th battle against cancer. Doctors had stopped treatments; both he and his family were turning to their faith.

A community of friends, strangers, babies, athletes and movie stars have rallied behind the young man and created a "Dan's Our Man" Facebook campaign. Familiar faces like Preston and Steve, Flyer Scotty Hartnell and even Christian Bale have pledged their support.

"Who would know that your brother's name would be on Batman's face," Jacquelyn Ruiz, Dan's sister said.

With more than 2500 likes, and pages worth of Dan's Our Man" pictures, the Hammond family is feeling the love.

"We just feel blessed to have all these people and all this support," Jack Hammond, Dan's father said.

To Danny, himself, finishing up his final fight, these messages mean the world.

"We showed it to him and his little grin...his smile says it all," Hammond said. "It's an amazing gift that they're giving us to stay positive at such a hard time."

Danny Hammond has devoted his life to helping others. For years, he has been a voice for Alex's Lemonade stand. He and his mom are featured in a video posted on the organization's website.

His family says Hammond is a real jokester with a huge heart. Danny has been involved with numerous fundraisers for various causes and has raised more than $100,000 for charity.

"There's always someone fighting sometimes even a bigger battle than you,"

In his own words:

"Throughout all this the most important lessons I've learned is humor, living life to its fullest and to help others along the way," Dan said.

Dan is our man, too. From his bedside his family told us he can't say thank you enough for the love and support.
