Co-owner thankful though fire destroyed business

Posted: Updated:

Things are slowly returning to normal after a massive industrial fire destroyed a Phoenix business, closed freeways and created huge traffic jams near the Interstate 10 and 17 interchange on Thursday.

The co-owner of Breecher Sales says he has a lot to be thankful for and that he and his brother plan to rebuild.  Sam Breecher says he's glad nobody was seriously injured and he's not letting this get him down.

Breecher Sales was founded by the brothers' parents.  The company sold products to local wholesalers for electrical, plumbing, irrigation and other businesses.

Fire Department officials say the fire apparently started from welding work.

And that was just the beginning.  The flames moved fast.

"I'd say within five minutes.." said Sam, who believes the fire actually started in the connecting business next door.

A welder's torch ignited some metal shavings, which are highly flammable -- sending a tall column of smoke over west-central Phoenix for more than hour.

By Friday, virtually nothing was left, but after 38 years in the business, Sam says they'll rebuild.

"We own the property.. we have great customers.." he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
