Microdwell exhibit demonstrates minimalist living at Phoenix museum

Posted: Updated:

Sustainability, recycling, and downsizing are the focus of a very unique exhibit at a valley museum. Local builders have made tiny homes, offices, and even a restaurant that are now on display at the Shemer Art Center.

The museum is located near 44th St & Camelback, the exhibit is called the Micro-dwell exhibit. You may have heard of tiny houses and this is the kind of twist on that because these are small spaces you can live in. Dan Dwer made one of the structures, an adobe style home made out of recycled styrofoam that is coated in a structural cement material making it eight to ten times stronger than a wood framed house.

"The whole microdwell concept is to minimalize your life and not clutter yourself with great big rooms with a ton of furniture and become a hoarder," said Dan Dwyer of GB Building Systems.

Patrick built a restaurant out of a salvage bucket in a steam shovel from a Bay City, Michigan industrial works. "It had previously been at Phoenix Brick Yard for 40 years, the owner scrapped it, so I decided to repurporse it into a pop-up restaurant," he said.

Another unit designed by an ASU student is a mobile studio for artists. "It's a mobile studio it's for mobile artists to appropriate the space, you can fold up the wall and take it on to the next location. You can paint on location, fold up and go to the next location," said Aaron Escamilla.

The exhibit is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. , next weekend they will have demonstrations on micro gardening.
