Suspect killed after bank robbery and pursuit

MESA, Ariz. -

Police shot and killed a robbery suspect after they say he threatened officers with a gun.  The shootout unfolded after the suspect led them on a chase.

It all began shortly after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday at a Bank of America branch located at Power and Baseline in Gilbert.  It ended in a hail of bullets roughly six miles away at an apartment complex near Crismon and Broadway.

"I woke up to three gunshots.  Heard cops pull in, heard cop sirens all over the place," said Elizabeth Newman, who lives near the complex.

From SkyFOX, you could see the complex layout and the suspect's truck between two patrol cars.

Police say when the suspect got out of the truck with a gun, two Gilbert officers opened fire.

A wider view showed officers gathered around where the suspect went down.

"Suspect was struck.. our officers provided medical assistance, performed CPR on him, but he did die here at the scene," said Gilbert Police Sgt. Jesse Sanger.

Police say a man robbed the bank and got away on a bicycle.  Several moments later, they believe the same man carjacked a Dodge truck from a Goodwill store's parking lot.  They say he rammed two Gilbert patrol cars as he fled the scene.

Moments later, the suspect turned into the parking lot of the apartment where he got out of the vehicle and was shot when police say he confronted officers with a gun.

No one else was hurt here, but residents are rattled.

"I said oh my God, we have to get the hell out of here.. I don't want to live here now 'cause that scared the hell out of me," said Newman.

Authorities have identified the suspect as 57-year-old Harold Lynn Phelps.

There was a minor injury reported in all of this.  The Gilbert officer whose car was rammed did go to a hospital for back pain, but we're told his juries are not serious.
