Rookie NYPD officer recovering from gunshots

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A police officer who was shot in Brooklyn is recovering after undergoing surgery, authorities said.

The shooting happened at Utica Avenue and Empire Boulevard in Crown Heights at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday after two rookie cops, Police Officer James Li and Police Officer Randy Chow, pulled two men off a B46 bus for possibly not paying the fare.

One of the men, Rashaun Robinson, then ran away, pulled out a .45-caliber handgun, and fired three times, the NYPD said.

Officer Li was hit in his legs, while Officer Chow chased after Robinson, police said. In the meantime, some passersby, including two off-duty EMTs, helped Officer Li until backup arrived. Li was rushed to Kings County Hospital.

"Shots rang out and I turned around out of the corner of my eye I saw a gentleman running up the block he turned around and started shooting about three seconds later I saw a cop come into view," said EMT Khadijah Hall.

"He was shot in all two legs. We wanted to keep him calm. We had to cut the clothes. We had expose to see where the gunshot was," said EMT Shaun Alexander.

Officers found Robinson on the fifth floor of a nearby building, police said. He has several prior arrests in New York City as well as an outstanding arrest warrant on narcotics charges in Pennsylvania, authorities said.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton and Officer Li's mother visited him in the hospital before he went into surgery.

Another officer fell during the chase and cut her chin, police said.

Video from SkyFoxHD showed several police vehicles and officers as well as yellow crime scene tape near a White Castle restaurant.
