PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

A popular high school wrestler has been hospitalized with a mystery illness. His foot is swollen and he is in extreme pain. Doctors say they don't know if his case is related to other skin conditions that have plagued local high school wrestlers for the last few months.

Doctors are waiting for lab cultures to come back. They say it could be a number of things including MRSA or some other severe bacterial infection.

The day after a big wrestling tournament in Prescott Dalis Smith, a junior at Basha High School, got sick.

"I woke about three in the morning and I couldn't walk because my foot was so swollen," said Dalis Smith.

Three days later he was admitted to Cardon Children's Hospital and rushed into surgery where doctors removed some of the skin off the top of his foot.

"It's just a fluke of bad luck, that's what the doctor said anyway," said Smith.

Dalis has a tube removing fluid from his swollen foot. And another surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. Doctors right now aren't sure what's causing all the swelling and pain.

"I would trade someone else for this I'd much rather be famous and on Hollywood than being right here right now," he said.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association has had to postponed wrestling tournaments this month because of an outbreak of skin infections like impetigo and ringworm in high school wrestlers. But so far none of these infections have required surgery like in Dalis's case.

Derek Smith, Dalis's father thinks it may be relating to his son's wrestling, "It's all speculation how can you pinpoint the nature of it, do I think its a direct result of the wrestling? Probably, it just seems like a chronological order of events the produced it," he said.

But until doctors get the test results back nothing can be confirmed. "It's definitely really scary because we don't know what it is and so we cant really treat it until we know what it is," said Dalis Smith.
