Snow storm weaker than anticipated

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Most of the tristate region was spared another brutal snow storm on Monday. New York City only saw a coating.

Colder air filtered in from the north Sunday night into Monday as the storm moved to the south.

Areas of southern New Jersey saw more snow than New York City and areas north.

Snow accumulations:

Islip, NY 0.8"

JFK 0.6"

LGA 0.4"

Newark 0.2"

Central Park 0.7"

One thing that the storm did bring everyone is colder temperatures.  They will plunge across the region as a front passes with record cold temperatures expected on Monday night.

The New York City Office of Emergency Management issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory for Monday, March 3.

Temperatures will not reach above freezing until Friday.

The Department of Sanitation also issued a Snow Alert.

In New Jersey, where a lot more snow is expected, Governor Chris Christie declared a State of Emergency, authorizing the State Director of Emergency Management to coordinate all preparation, response and recovery efforts for the storm with all county and municipal emergency operations and governmental agencies.  The Governor also announced the closure of all state offices on Monday, March 3rd for all non-essential employees.

A WINTER STORM WARNING was posted for Ocean and Monmouth Counties in New Jersey.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
