Regulators suspend license of Darien doctor facing federal charges

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

State regulators have suspended the license of a west suburban doctor facing federal charges for allegedly giving narcotic pills to an undercover agent, then charging Medicare for the drugs.

Sathish Narayanappa Babu, 47, owner of Anik Life Sciences Medical Corp. in Darien, was charged Feb. 18 with conspiracy to illegally dispense a controlled substance and health care fraud, according to federal court documents.

The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation has temporarily suspended Babu's physician's license and his controlled substance license, which he has held since 2008, according to the department.

He will be required to appear before a disciplinary board, according to documents filed Friday by the IDFPR.

Babu allegedly prescribed hundreds of pills that were paid for in large part by Medicare, and also billed Medicare for medical treatments that never occurred, according to a statement issued by the U.S. Attorney's office.

Between November 2012 and December 2013, Babu wrote five prescriptions — each for 60 doses of 80mg Oxycontin — to a patient he had never seen or examined, and was actually an undercover agent, according to prosecutors.

The undercover agent posed as a healthy person covered by Medicare who was looking for prescription medication, including oxycodone, the statement said. He claimed to have shoulder pain from a previous injury and to be on disability.

Representatives from Anik Life Sciences, none of whom are physicians or nurses, visited the agent about 10 times in an apartment, the statement said.

Babu, of Bolingbrook, was released on a $100,000 bond and prohibited from writing prescriptions or submitting claims to Medicare.

He is scheduled to appear for a status hearing in U.S. District Court in Chicago on March 12.
