CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

People posing as utility company representatives and demanding immediate bill payments are the latest on the Better Business Bureau's list of scam warnings for residents in Chicago and northern Illinois.

Callers claiming to be from ComEd or Nicor Gas are phoning up utility customers and asking them to make an immediate payment on their "delinquent" accounts, individuals and businesses told the BBB, according to a statement from the group.

The caller would then ask customers to load the payment on to a gift card or Green Dot card, and then call back with the card information, the BBB said.

Anyone who receives a similar call should not give out personal or financial information, Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of BBB in Chicago and Northern lllinois, said in the statement.

"Instead they should contact their utlity company's customer service department and verify that a call was made," Bernas said.

Victims should also call police, BBB said.
