WHEATON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A former Chicago man who was a no-show in court in 2006 when he was sentenced to 10 years in prison for bilking an acquaintance out of nearly $100,000 has been arrested in Detroit.

Angelo Pesce, 48, pleaded guilty in September 2006 to bilking a female acquaintance out of more than $93,000, according to a statement from the DuPage County State's Attorney's office.

Pesce told the woman he was a commodities trader who had recently sold his company for millions of dollars, and his assets had been frozen by the Securities and Exchange Commission, the statement said. He assured her that if she would loan him money, he would pay her back when his assets were unfrozen.

Over a period of nearly six months in 2004, the woman gave Pesce a total of $93,534.93 under the assumption she would be paid back, the statement said.

Pesce never paid her back and in April 2005, he was charged with two counts of theft by deception, prosecutors said. He was released on bail while his case was pending.

After he pleaded guilty, sentencing was set for Nov. 13, 2006. The hearing was continued to Dec. 27, but Pesce did not show up, prosecutors said.

An arrest warrant was issued, and he was later sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison. But his whereabouts were unknown until late last week, when he was taken into custody in Detroit on unrelated charges, prosecutors said.

Pesce will begin serving his sentence immediately, and will appear in court March 11 to face one count of violating his bond.
