NYPD cracks down on double-parking

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The NYPD apparently is on a major crackdown on double parking called Operation Move Along. If you think you are safe idling a minute or two in the road, think again -- you may get slapped with a huge fine. How much? $115.

Operation Move Along is a community outreach program trying to educate New Yorkers on double parking before the tickets start flowing.

This is part of Commissioner Bill Bratton's targeting traffic flow, since traffic deaths are almost as high as homicides in New York City.

We were at Seventh Avenue and 30th Street around 2:45 p.m. Thursday and we saw a couple of trucks are double parked, one of them for an hour. Traffic weaved and dodged to go around the double-parked delivery trucks. It is a common midtown occurrence, cab drivers say.

Both trucks got a ticket.

But for two weeks, police will be not only ticketing but leafleting truck drivers and store owners on problem streets in each borough, like on Main Street in Flushing. The leaflets will emphasize no double parking because of the problems it causes, like accidents and traffic jams.

After March 16, there will be a period of increased enforcement of a $115 fine.

Double parkers in Flushing said they had their reasons: they were waiting for parking.

A UPS delivery truck driver said off camera he has no choice but to double park and that he gets 7 or 8 tickets a day.

In Bensonhurst, another double parking problem area identified by police, some drivers complained about the cost of the double parking ticket.

The heavy double parking enforcement begins March 17.

The NYPD is targeting several neighborhoods: Midtown South, Washington Heights, Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Whitestone, Port Morris, Mott Haven, Melrose, Bensonhurst, Crown Heights, and Staten Island's North Shore.

Step through the doors of Hope's Land of Candy in Island Park, Long Island and you''ll be taking a trip back in time. There's no WIFI but they do have a Victrola piano. And then there's the candy.. lots and lots of it.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
