City of Williams facing water regulations after dry winter

Posted: Updated:

People living in the small city of Williams in Northern Arizona are keeping a close eye on their water supply. After a dry winter some strict water regulations are in place.
Because of the dry winter the multiple reservoirs they use for city water are critically low. Earlier this week the city sent out a notice to citizens saying they are under a level four water crisis the highest level and are asking for citizens and businesses to conserve anywhere they can.

"This winter unfortunately has been a dry one," said Williams City Manager Brandon Buchanan.

"We've implemented level four water restrictions in the community. It's the strictest water restrictions we have and it's in an effort to conserve the water supply we do have," said Buchanan.

This is the earliest Williams has ever implemented any type of water restriction and they haven't had to issue a level four restriction in eight years. City Manager, Brandon Buchanan says this is a tricky situation.

"Williams has historically relied on five reservoirs that are refilled through precip through the winter and you know that's snow and rain. Without any of that precip this winter we're at the point now where three of those five are empty or too dirty for us to treat at their low levels," he said.

Citizens will have stricter times on when they can water their lawns and will face fines if they are washing off sidewalks or washing their cars.

"We haven't had too much snow, other years we would get snow but we would have dry summers in between but this is just all of a sudden everything has hit us so I say were in danger," said Perico Avila, a resident.

"It is going to be a difficult summer for us, we're watching every gallon. On paper we have enough water to get us through the end of the summer but after that is a bit question mark," said Buchanan.
