CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Scoring a scholarship can do wonders for tuition bills. There are a lot of scholarships out there, but an expert says you better hurry because the deadline is coming up.

The graduating class of 2014 has applied for college, students have an idea where they're going, but can they pay for it?

"It's pretty stressful…trying to put it all together. I mean we have a pretty good system helping us prepare, but it's still a lot of stuff to worry about," said a high school student.

"It's really good. At Jones they have a lot help for us. ‘A College Knowledge'---that's what they call the program here and basically we get a lot of college registration processes," another student said.

Aside from athletic, merit and need scholarships, college counselor Lindsey Hunter of Kenwood Academy said that when it comes to college funds, you have to be strategic about everything from the beginning.

"A lot of times we think that an expensive school is going to cost too much, so we don't apply to those schools, but usually those private school have a bigger endowment, which they can afford to give more money to students," said Hunter.

Hunter said students have to show the college or university they want to be there. If you visit a school, spend some time on campus before getting there. That school may have a scholarship for someone who's left-handed, less than 5'1" or over 6'5".

Those types of scholarships may only be $500, but it all adds up.

Hunter also said that parents should be open and honest about the family's financial situation.

"A lot if students don't recognize they need this money and they think there's a money tree somewhere," said Hunter.
