Freeway project takes Tucson traffic over tracks

Posted: Updated:

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A freeway interchange in Tucson is partially open again following a reconstruction project that takes traffic over adjacent railroad tracks.

The state Department of Transportation says the new design of the Interstate 10 interchange at Prince Road means that motorists no longer will be inconvenienced by the dozens of trains that use the Union Pacific tracks daily.

The previous Prince Road crossing of the railroad tracks was at the same grade, so traffic backed up when trains passed through the area.

The new overpass is 30 feet above ground level.

It's part of a $76 million project to widen I-10 in northwest Tucson.

ADOT says the eastbound I-10 entrance ramp at Prince Road will remain closed for another month so crews can complete remaining work.
