Broken-down elevators trap Centerline residents in their homes

CENTER LINE, Mich. (WJBK) -

Residents with varying health issues are concerned about their safety and well-being because the elevators at their complex have been out of service for about a week now.  

They live at the Lawrence Park Senior Residence in Centerline and tell FOX 2's Andrea Isom many tenants are in wheelchairs, rely on walkers or have other health problems.

Leroy Martin says one resident missed dialysis appointments because the elevators weren't working, and now he's in the hospital.

"He missed two days going to the dialysis, the elevator messed up. He got sick upstairs. ... EMS had to go upstairs to the third floor, get him and bring him down. He's still in the hospital," he says.

An office assistant at the complex told Isom the FOX 2 crew was not supposed to be on the property, but said a maintenance worker was in the building fixing the elevators.

Centerline police were called and the FOX 2 crew left the property, but returned later and found the elevators were still not working.  

One woman told Isom she heard the maintenance worker got stuck in the elevator and left.

Isom called the after-hours number, but was told to come back or call back in the morning.
