6 mental health facilities close Monday, patients scramble for care

Posted: Updated:
PINE CITY, Minn. (KMSP) -

Riverwood Centers locations will shut their doors Monday, leaving patients scrambling to find other mental health care.

Rochelle Domino says she just wants answers.

"I wanted to know where my records were going to be, why they're shutting down, would like to be able to see my counselor," Domino said.

Domino walked into an empty counseling office at the Riverwood Centers location in Pine City, Minnesota.

"No furniture no nothing, two people were standing there packing a box," she said.

Domino says an email saying Riverwood Centers would be shutting down Monday was the only notice she got.

"They just cut us off -- no bumper," she said.

Like many others, Domino turned to Riverwood Centers for counseling and mental health services, especially after she lost her job last year.

"Situational depression. Meaning that you lose your job, things happen and you need someone to talk to," Domino explained.

According to the Riverwood Centers website, the chain of clinics is described as a nonprofit licensed with the state and headquartered in Braham. The department of human services confirmed all six locations in east central Minnesota will be shut down on Monday without explanation.

Even with some possible care alternatives, Domino says many clients will need time to build trust with new counselors, and a transition like this could disrupt their progress.

"There are some people -- children, women, men -- who don't have the courage to reach out for just a little bit of help," she said.

According to a voicemail from a Riverwood Centers caseworker in Pine City, the clinic's final day will be Monday, but it is unknown who will be there or how long it will stay open. For now, the emergency crisis hotline will still be staffed with counselors to help people in need.
