Survey: men exaggerate symptoms

Posted: Updated:

Men are pretty tough. Okay, maybe not so manly when it comes to giving birth. Or maybe when sick with a common cold. Research supports it.

One British study from 2010 suggests one in two men exaggerate by describing the common cold as "the flu" or a minor headache as a migraine; 57 percent of men seek more attention when sick and 66 percent moan.

But why?

Dr. Cooper Lawrence, a psychologist, says that women are generally tougher than men when it comes to feeling ill because women are more used to not feeling too swell.

One thing men do have going for themselves, according to the study, is that they call out less frequently than women when they don't feel great; women tend to be more vocal about their ailments every day.
