3-year-old child killed by car; driver detained at scene

PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

Phoenix police say a 3-year-old boy in a stroller was hit and killed in a Walmart parking lot.

This all happened near 75th Avenue and McDowell Thursday afternoon.

Police described the scene as "horrifying."

The babysitter was leaving the shopping center when she attempted to cross a private road maintained by the property's owners.

Witnesses say the vehicle's driver heeded a stop sign but then continued on and hit the woman and stroller.

"The collision occurred without him trying to stop.  The vehicle then continued on and stopped when he realized what he had done," said Sgt. Trent Crump.  "The child's father was here on unrelated business.. this was a babysitter that had the child and the father was actually here on this property.. came over because of the commotion and realized this was his child that was involved in this collision."

The driver was taken into custody and given a sobriety test.  Investigators say there was possibility of marijuana in the car.  He was later released.

"This family's not supposed to watch their child die.. there is a lot of numbness with the family right now," said Crump.

No names have been released in this case.

Police are investigating the 22-year-old driver for possible impairment and determining if there is any negligence or recklessness.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
