PHOENIX (KSAZ) -

What started out as Phoenix police officers responding to a shoplifting call at a Walmart store near 23rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road has turned into a manhunt.

Authorities say when officers confronted that suspect, he ran into a nearby hotel's parking lot and that's where things got very dangerous.

"As the officer approached the vehicle, the suspect jumped in the car.. the officer's fist went through the window.. the same time the individual was backing out.. he was entangled in that vehicle.. he fired one shot at the suspect.  We don't know if he was hit.. the vehicle was able to get away," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson.

Officers immediately began searching the area.  They were randomly stopping vehicles and searching them as well.

Authorities are searching for a Honda vehicle with an oxidized hood and punched out window.  They describe the suspect as a black male with a bald head.

This is a developing story.  Stay with FOX 10 News for updates.
