Well known Phoenix bakery closing its doors after 50 years

Posted: Updated:

A favorite central Phoenix bakery is going out of business. After five decades in the valley Karsh's Bakery is closing it's doors.

Everybody has a favorite at Karsh's, and they are lining up to buy what's left.

Judy Belveal got the news of her bakery closing, "I got a text from a friend saying hey your bakery is closing, I said what?!."

Belveal rushed down to the bakery on 7th street and Missouri and got in line; she wasn't alone.

A lot of the cookies and rye bread have already been sold leaving a lot of empty baskets, but people are still standing in line, waiting to get inside.

"I'm thinking I don't know what I am going to do about rye bread nothing else compares," said Belveal.

Owner Wayne Kinding tried hard to keep the bakery open.

"It's sad to say we are closing today because of the economy and stuff, we've tried to come back from 2008," said Kinding.

The competition was tough, and there wasn't enough customers to pay the new lease. The store shut it's doors at 6 p.m. Wednesday evening.

"It's been here forever, it's a staple in Phoenix, it's kind of heart wrenching," said Vicki Davis.
