Manhattan store claims to sell Google Glass

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

We were intrigued when we saw the signs in the window of the Carnegie electronics store. The ads looked official and said they have Google Glass in stock. That's odd because Google tells us the high-tech glasses are not in any stores yet. So we went in with an undercover camera to find out.

Our attempt to purchase the Google Glass they claimed they had in stock began with being told they didn't have any available. But then when we said we wanted to pay cash, a salesman made a phone call.

A while later we saw a man appear at the door with a box in a plastic shopping bag. That was our Google Glass set. When we asked for a demonstration, the glasses -- which are designed to search the web on a voice command, dial calls and do other tasks -- did not work. They claimed it needed charging.

There were a couple red flags waving in front of our eyes. Google says Glass is only available through a limited explorer program, which requires a code number. The glasses can be purchased for $1,500 only if you're approved and only through Google.

Carnegie Digital Computers is selling theirs for nearly $2,000, but the salesman was willing to sell them to me for $1,900 cash and no sales tax.

We left the store and came back to see if the device was charged and we could see it in action. The salesman said he had to give it to someone else.

We left and then came back with our Fox 5 camera. Henry slipped out the door and we chased him. Then we went back to talk to his associates. No one wanted to talk and they asked us to leave.

Google confirmed the company is not selling Glass in any retail store. We were unable to find out from the store where they got the device they showed us.
