PHILADELPHIA -

The Philadelphia Eagles announced Friday that they have released wide receiver DeSean Jackson, and as reports emerge on possible reasons for the move the Pro Bowl player is disputing them in a statement.

The team tweeted Friday afternoon, "After careful consideration this offseason, Eagles decide to part ways with DeSean Jackson. The team informed him of his release today."

The 27-year-old was coming off a career-best season in Philadelphia, leading the team with 82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns.

Jackson had a $10.25 million contract for the 2014 season, a stiff price the Eagles were not willing to pay. He was signed through 2016.

He has 356 career receptions for 6,117 yards and 32 touchdowns. The 27-year-old Jackson is entering his seventh season.

There have been lots of rumors related to the speedy, big-play wide-out leading up to Friday's release.

Earlier this week, head coach Chip Kelly was required to speak to the media at the NFL owners meetings and did not give Jackson a ringing endorsement when asked if he wanted the Pro Bowl wide receiver on his team.

Kelly spent close to the first 10 minutes of the media session answering questions about Jackson, and he was clearly annoyed at having to deal with the subject. Kelly said he would do what's best for the organization and that the offense is not predicated on one player.

Jackson tried to make it sound good on social media.

One issue with trade talk involving Jackson was his telling the media that he wanted a new contract.

Many of the recent reports mentioned the Eagles' general concerns related to off-field issues.

A new wrinkle that came out at lunchtime Friday, before Jackson's release, was a story by NJ.com reporting that, according to sources, the team was concerned with Jackson's "gang connections."

And FOX 29's Howard Eskin tweeted after Friday's news broke that, according to sources, a recent reported robbery at Jackson's South Philadelphia home "had all kinds of holes. No forced entry, no money stolen, even had little cash left."

Eskin added that sources say police found less than $100 and car keys left on a counter, and the robbery report is deemed suspicious. Eskin's sources say police believe no cash was stolen, and that only a gun was missing.

Eskin also tweeted that, according to a state police source, Jackson was stopped several years ago with drugs and guns in a car, but possible felony charges were dropped.

It was just Tuesday when Jackson was trying to throw cold water on the rumors, directing people to his Instagram account, which had a picture of him and Kelly at training camp last summer.

"Good to talk to Big Chip Today!!" Jackson posted to Twitter. "Say or hear what ya want!! The picture speaks for itself!! Winner..."

Other reports had Kelly assuring Jackson and telling him to get ready for camp.

After Friday's release, Jackson responded again on Twitter, posting, "Steady GRind Mode God Got the Plan !! Not Me .. "

The post linked to an Instagram video of Jackson wearing a T-shirt that says "Talent" and sprinting around a running track.

And then came  the following statement, attributed to Jackson, on his release and disputing some of the reporting:

"First I would like to thank the Eagles organization, the Eagles fans and the city of Philadelphia for my time in Philly. I would also like to thank coach Andy Reed for bringing me in. Secondly, I would like to address the misleading and unfounded reports that my release has anything to do with any affiliation that has been speculated surrounding the company I keep off of the field. I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang. I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values. I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true . I look forward to working hard for my new team. God Bless."
