Battle over ridesharing services heats up

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona Senate committee has approved a bill championed by ridesharing companies like Uber that seek to be classified differently than traditional cab companies.

An amendment to House Bill 2262 would exempt them from certain rules that apply to taxi and limousine companies. Members of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Military and Energy approved the amended bill with 4-1 on March 19.

It is another attempt to regulate the relatively-new service, which allows members to hail rides with a swipe of smartphone.

Ridesharing programs say they should not be subject to the same regulations as cabs because they do not pick up people from the street. But many in the insurance and traditional taxi service industry say the companies are not regulated enough, posing safety risks to the public.
