Gilbert boy uses his wish to build new neighborhood playground

Posted: Updated:

Make-A-Wish Arizona granted a valley boy facing a life-threatening illness his wish Saturday, but the Gilbert nine-year-old decided to pay it forward and give a gift to his community.

Logan Carson wished for a playground in his Gilbert neighborhood near McQueen and Guadalupe Roads. When Make-A-Wish Arizona asked him what he wanted, he could have wished for most anything, but Logan wanted something everyone could enjoy.

"I was gonna share with my friends," said Logan.

It's not every day that a nine-year-old boy gets to cut the ribbon to a playground made for him, designed by him, but then again Logan Carson's every day is anything but typical. Logan lost his eye, right leg below the knee, and four fingers.

"I got strep, and it went through my body," said Logan.

His wish is the largest in Make-A-Wish Arizona's history. A total of 16 organizations had to come together make it all happen.

"We do about 317 wishes a year, but we have very few wishes where it's a wish to give and that's truly what this is," said Hollie Costello with Make-A-Wish Arizona.

Logan's parents say that's just how their son works. He wants those around him to be happy.

"He enjoys watching kids do the things he can't do," said Jamie Carson, Logan's father.

Logan says he feels happy seeing others play on the playground, and tells his friends, "you can play whenever you want."
