Flagstaff officials to mull panhandling proposal

Posted: Updated:

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) - The Flagstaff City Council is scheduled to make its initial vote Tuesday on a proposal that would prohibit aggressive panhandling.

The proposal would make it a misdemeanor for panhandlers to solicit money within 15 feet of a bank, ATM, bus stop or a business.

It also would prohibit a panhandler from following someone and continuing to ask for money after the person has refused to give them money.

It would bar people from soliciting from unaccompanied children under the age of 16.

A similar statewide ban on aggressive panhandling is moving through the Legislature.

The City Council also is tentatively set to consider the proposal again on April 15.
