Campaign works to save stray pets in Maricopa County

Posted: Updated:

A three year long campaign that aims to save as many stray pets as possible in Maricopa County is getting ready to hold a huge event.

They're hopeful to get at risk animals new homes.
Shelters in Maricopa county are filled with little Chihuahuas, pit bull mixes, and cats up for adoption, waiting to be loved.
"Cats are definitely one of our most at risk breeds in the shelter system along with Chihuahuas and pit bulls," said Bretta Nelson with the Arizona Humane Society.

Four major shelters the Arizona Animal Welfare League, Arizona Humane Society, Halo, and Maricopa County Animal Care and Control are holding a massive adoption event at their 11 locations for fix, adopt, save, awareness day.

It's part of a three year campaign aimed at ending pet homelessness in Maricopa County.

"Our intake has decreased by 5%, we've increased our spay and neuter surgeries by 11%, and in just the first year we decreased our euthanasia by 14%," said Heather Shefton with Fix, Adopt, Save.

100 dogs a day are adopted from valley shelters a day, but, unfortunately, 100 more are also euthanized.
"Maricopa County has the second largest over population problem in the nation next to Los Angeles, so there's a big need for all shelters to come together," said Michelle Ramos with the Arizona Animal Welfare League.

The goal to change the equation through adoption thru fostering and free spay neuter programs to give these lovable critters forever homes.
