Cronut bakery reopens after mouse closure

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The famous Dominique Ansel Bakery in SoHo, home to the in-demand Cronut- reopened on Tuesday after health inspectors shut its doors last week because of evidence of a infestation of mice.

The New York City Health Department said that the bakery passed its reopening inspection on Monday and was cleared to open its doors for business again. The bakery typically has a line of people outside waiting to buy a Cronut which is a croissant-doughnut hybrid pastry.

"The establishment was closed by the Department because of a severe mouse infestation that requires professional pest control services," the Health Department said in a statement last week.

On Tuesday, the bakery reopened with a special item to celebrate, a Rocky-themed Cronut. "It's not about how hard you hit, but how you get back up," said a representative for the bakery.

A customer shot video from inside Dominique Ansel Bakery showing a tiny mouse scurrying across the floor of the bakery behind the counter.

A press rep for the bakery emailed a statement to Fox 5, apologizing to customers for the inconvenience but also expressing dismay at how a short video can harm a small business. It also said that the DOH ordered it to re-cement the entire basement.

"As a small one-shop bakery, we often feel like we're being looked at under a tremendous microscope. The health department sent not one, but 4 inspectors, and we were not given a chance for a second inspection," the statement said, in part. "We work hard to run a clean and good operation, but see that we were targeted and will rise to the occasion to be even better!"
