Police: Man threw Molotov cocktail at stepson's home to teach him a lesson

A grandfather accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at his stepson's home has been arrested.

Police say his grandchildren were standing outside and watched him light the fire bomb before throwing it toward their house near 37th Avenue and Thunderbird.

Authorities say Ruben Duncan told them he wasn't trying to set the house on fire -- he was trying to teach his stepson a lesson -- a lesson for disowning his mother after a fight on Mother's Day that happened years ago.

You could see where that Molotov cocktail ended up.  Part of the sidewalk was burned.

Police say Duncan threw the fire bomb at the house, but it landed in the street and slid towards the sidewalk before exploding.

"It was big. It was really big. It was spread out.  I'm going to say at least 15 feet," said Carrie Garner, a neighbor.

The fire never reached the house -- thanks, in part to neighbors.

"We heard screaming and yelling.  'Help us!' And our roommate Teddy ran over here and grabbed the garden hose from the lady who lives here and put out the fire," said Garner.

Duncan's 11 and 15-year-old granddaughters were standing outside when police say he lit the five gallon gas can, stuffed it with a rag on fire, tossed it towards the house and then drove away.

"Who would do that?..broad daylight.. there's kids on the street and everything," said Garner.  "The younger one was just in hysterics.. was so scared and shaky and crying and stuff."

Police say when they arrested Duncan, he told them he did it to teach his stepson a lesson about consequences for not loving his mother.

Duncan also said he wasn't trying to set the house on fire and would never hurt his stepson or grandchildren.

Duncan's wife called FOX 10 to tell us she is trying to get her husband help and stressed that her husband is a veteran.  She also said she doesn't believe he was trying to throw the Molotov cocktail at the house.
