Responses to all ignored Arizona abuse reports

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - A team assigned to review nearly 6,600 child abuse and neglect reports that weren't investigated by Arizona child welfare officials say all the cases have now been assigned to investigators.

The so-called CARE team named on Dec. 2 by Gov. Jan Brewer provided the latest update late Monday.

It says more than 10,000 children identified in the reports have now been seen and all 6,596 ignored cases have had a response. Some children could still need to be seen.

Brewer removed the state's Child Protective Services department from its parent agency and set up a new cabinet-level department to handle child welfare. The CARE team is led by Charles Flanagan, the new department's director.

The governor says in a statement she's proud of the team's work.
