Smoke in Grand Station forces Red Line trains to reroute

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Some Red Line trains were rerouted to the elevated tracks during Tuesday morning's commute after smoke was detected at the Grand Red Line station.

Firefighters were called to the Grand stop about 7:20 a.m. for a smell of smoke coming from debris on tracks, CTA spokesman Brian Steele said.

No trains were stopped, but trains heading north and south between Fullerton and Cermak/Chinatown were rerouted to elevated tracks, while power was cut off through the regular route, Steele said.

Power was restored and trains were moving via the underground trains again about 7:50 a.m., Steele said.

Fire Media Affairs did not immediately respond to calls for more details.
