"Too Young To Drink": Students honored for underage drinking PSA

Posted: Updated:

Underage drinking and the risks that go along with it were pushed into the spotlight earlier this month after an Arizona State University student plunged to her death off an apartment complex balcony.

Police say the 18-year-old had been drinking at a fraternity party earlier in the night.

On Wednesday, students from South Mountain High School were honored for their work to curb underage drinking.

They put together a public service announcement called "Too Young To Drink."

They're a talented and creative bunch.  The students took home some hardware -- earning first and second place awards for the video and audio PSAs they put together for a contest sponsored by the Phoenix Police Department.

Multimedia students at South Mountain High School combined drama and drinking in the powerful PSA.

"We decided we want them to feel this emotionally, so they don't have to see it in reality, in real life.. that's what made the film.. that's what made our PSA," said SMHS student Leilonni Robinson.

The Phoenix police's contest challenged students to come up with a PSA for the theme "Too Young to Drink."  SMHS took first place for the video, winning $5,000 for the school.

"Even if we hadn't won, I would've been happy because we put our heart and dedication into it," said Robinson.

The class also won second place and $2,000 for their audio PSA.

"I was proud.  I was very proud because we did work really hard," said Nathalie Torres.

SMHS' first place video PSA will be shown in Harkins theaters for a month.  Most of the students in the multimedia class dream of going into the film and television industries.
