Wayne Co. union workers say they were forced to settle for less

Posted: Updated:
(WJBK) - After years of litigation, Wayne County and nearly 1,300 union workers have reached a wages settlement.

A judge ruled in 2012 the county acted illegally by imposing 20 percent paycuts and furloughs, and denied the county's appeal. Some workers affected were even promised 100 percent of lost wages plus interest.

However, with a vote last week, county workers settled for less than half of what they were owed. While they won't recoup everything, union members say they feared losing more money with a possible bankruptcy, or a possible county emergency manager taking over.

Wayne County officials say the settlement was reached in good faith.

The county commission is expected to approve the settlement and payouts are expected in May and July.
