Suspect killed, officer injured in officer-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:

A man who tazed an off-duty Phoenix Police Officer last night is dead after that officer shot him.

"I heard a couple shots, so I just came out of my apartment next thing I knew the cops were everywhere," said Tyrone Gilham.

Police say two off duty officers, hired to provide security for the Biltmore on the Lakes Apartments near I-17 and Peoria were questioning two men, whom they thought looked suspicious, in the parking lot around 7 o'clock Friday night.

The men ran off, one officer chased down one man, but the second officer struggled with the other man, 32 year old Jefferson Duncan.

"They got into a violent fight, at this point we believe the suspect was able to get a hold of the officer's Taser," said Phoenix Police Sergeant Tommy Thompson.

Police say Duncan tazed the officer, incapacitating him, when he recovered he said Duncan had the Taser pointed at his head threatening to use it that's when the officer fired at him numerous times.

"My roommate seen it all go down said they were wrestling and started hearing gunshots... He said he heard five to eight gunshots," said Nickolas Hoff.

Police say the off-duty officers, who were in uniform, were recently hired to do security for the apartment complex.

"They just started on Monday its just so odd that happened within a week of them starting," said Gilham

Phoenix Police say Duncan later died at the hospital, investigators do not know if he had a criminal record or why he ran.

The man with him, 40 year old Jonathan Richard parker was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant for DUI liquor and drugs.

A spokesperson for the apartment complex says neither men are residents.

"We get so many random people walking through here that don't live in the complex, and they're shooting up stuff or starting fights, its kind of ridiculous," said Gilham.

The officer was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released.

Phoenix Police say he will be put on administrative leave, something that is standard following an officer involved shooting.
