County attorney speaks out about mothers who left kids in hot car

Posted: Updated:

Two valley women, facing nearly identical charges, both accused of leaving their children in a hot car unattended.
One of the two women, Shanesha Taylor, has found sympathy from people nationwide. On Tuesday supporters filed a petition with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to have the charges against her dropped.
Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery on Wednesday talked about the two recent cases of valley mothers Shanesha Taylor and Maria Pio accused of leaving their kids alone in hot cars.
"These two situations have some commonalities but they also have some peculiar differences. That may call for us to adjust how we resolve those cases and the resolution may be different," said Montgomery.
Taylor's case has received national attention with a website raising more than 100-thousand dollars for her. On Tuesday supporters dropped off folders of 12-thousand names of people asking for charges against Taylor to be dropped, Montgomery was not amused.

"First they weren't signatures. They were just a list of names from the website. So I don't know whether any of the individuals in their pajamas who logged onto the site and put their name in there really had a clue all the circumstances involved in this particular case," he said.

There has not been an outpouring of support for Pio who was in a store shopping for 45 minutes and getting Starbucks while police say her 14 month old son was locked inside her SUV crying his eyes out.

"What's critical about that is that at the time that firefighters were able to get the child out - the inside of the vehicle measured 124 degrees. And the car seat measured 113 degrees. Both of which place a child at 14 months in jeopardy," said Montgomery.
