Edison Midtown: New high-rise to be built on Central Avenue

Posted: Updated:

The first high-rise in downtown Phoenix since 2008 and it's a residential project.

It will be on Central Avenue, south of Thomas and north of McDowell.

The former home to Child Help USA -- an old building -- will be demolished to give way to a residential high-rise called Edison Midtown.

"I see that something is going to thrive and make the neighborhood better," said Christian Block, owner of Shine Coffee.

The building will be located on North Central Avenue, north of Vernon Street -- take a look at this -- $22 million to build it and it will have 80 unique units.

"There's definitely a need. I heard one projection that says they're 5,000 housing units short in central and downtown Phoenix.  Typically when you have a bid, redevelopment.. the housing goes hand in hand.  In this case, the infrastructure is in and the housing needs to follow," said Rob Riles, a developer with Deco Communities.

For us, I think obviously the demo will be difficult, but I see it as a positive because there will be something there because now it's an old empty shell," said Block.

The units range in size -- 800 to 1,350 square feet, contemporary kitchens, repurposed countertops, large balconies and of course, the view.  Prices start in the $200,000s.

Demolition will begin this summer and the project should be completed sometime in 2016.
