Phoenix Police arrest head of "Beer Run University"

Posted: Updated:

Phoenix Police call it "beer run university", an apartment where a woman allegedly taught people how to steal beer, and then she would resell the beer for profit, now she is behind bars.
Authorities say their investigation started in February after they arrested a man for allegedly stealing 30 packs of beer from a Circle K.

Police say the man told them he would sell the beer to "mama", but he was not talking about his mother.

According to police, he was talking about a woman who allegedly trafficked thousands of dollars worth of beer.

26 cases of beer, several single cans, and about 56 hundred dollars in cash were recovered from the apartment on 28th street and Wier avenue.

58-year old Irene Gonzalez allegedly trafficked and sold beer on the black market, her beer runners according to police just called her mama.

"Everyone in the neighborhood knew that you could take the beer to her and sell it to her, and the folks who wanted cheap beer knew that they could do to her and buy it," said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Phoenix Police say their two month investigation started after they arrested one of Gonzalez's beer runners. Detectives say he told them all about "mama" then detectives went under cover.

"She purchased  beer from them 15 dollars for each 30 pack. The detectives left continued their investigation, continued to watch the apartment, and then they went back two, three, and even four times to sell beer," said Holmes.

Phoenix Police say the woman ran what they are calling a beer run university where she taught her suppliers how to steal beer.

"Ms. Gonzalez would tutor the detectives on the best way to do their beer runs, she said never do a beer run on a Friday that's a bad day because that's payday and there's more people in the store," said Holmes.

None of the family members at the home on 28th street and Wier ave would speak to us about the case.

"Rarely do we get the fence, the beer runner we arrest will not talk about what they are doing with beer," said Holmes.

Gonzalez is facing four counts for trafficking stolen property one count for every time she bought beer from the undercover phoenix detectives.
